Chelsea have purchased the majority of a 1.2 acre site close to Stamford Bridge from the Stoll Foundation. Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions, located in the shadow of the Blues' famous stadium, confirmed on its X (Twitter) page about the completed deal.
A statement read: «Today we have announced that we have agreed to sell the majority of our Fulham site to the Chelsea FC ownership group following a nine-week resident consultation. This will enable us to establish new properties, better services for veterans and secure Stoll's financial sustainability.»
The deal has now been completed for an estimated £80million, which will now allow Chelsea to push forward with their plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge in the future. Such a purchase would suggest that the club are leaning towards remaining at Stamford Bridge rather than relocating somewhere else and building a new stadium.
Chelsea, however, are not expected to take possession of the property for another two years and it does not mean anything imminent for the stadium, it was a market sale responded to. But when Chelsea finally do take possession of the area, then it will allow the ownership group to not only increase the size and capacity of Stamford Bridge, but also build external features outside of the stadium, to further the match day experience in west London.
If they were to knock down Stamford Bridge and go ahead with a big expansion, then owning this land will give them plenty more room for manoeuvre. The Stoll charity will now reinvest the £80m they will receive in establishing new properties for veterans elsewhere.
