Hopes were high within the Manchester United hierarchy that they'd landed the next Kylian Mbappe after plucking Hannibal Mejbri right off the Monaco production line.
Of course, the Tunisia international plays in a different position, but the general consensus was that if Mejbri could have a similar sort of impact as Mbappe then the Red Devils had played a blinder. United signed him when he was just 17 for a fee of £4.2million rising to £8.4m.
At the time, the deal didn't exactly dominate the back pages. Few knew who Mebjbri was both inside United and out, but the talented technician soon introduced himself to his team-mates. According to The Athletic, one training ground source claimed the former Monaco man was so good he 'took the p***" out of his team-mates' with his ability.
"He is composed, can go past a player and break a line," the source claimed. "He actually takes the p*** sometimes against players a couple of years older than him. He'll feint to strike then drag it and shoot the other way."
However, things haven't exactly gone to plan for Mejbri since his eagerly anticipated arrival. He certainly hasn't been United's answer to Mbappe, having made just nine first-team appearances since joining four years ago.
Between his debut under Ralf Rangnick in May 2021 and his most recent performance for the Red Devils, Mejbri enjoyed a transformative loan spell at Birmingham City for the 2022/23 campaign which saw him make 41 appearances for the Blues.
The midfielder returned to Old Trafford a lot closer to the first team and has in turn featured six times so far this term, including a Champions League debut during the 3-2 home defeat by Galatasaray. There is still clearly work to be done, given Mejbri has enjoyed just six
