It took eight years but Arsenal's first Premier League win over Manchester City since 2015 was worth the wait. A cagey affair looked to be heading towards a goalless draw before Gabriel Martinelli's shot from distance deflected off Nathan Ake to give the Gunners the win five minutes from time.
It was a nervy wait for the final whistle but when Michael Oliver finally sounded the game's end, the scenes were unsurprisingly jubilant at the Emirates Stadium. Mikel Arteta raced onto the pitch to join a huddle with his players, Martin Odegaard did his usual lap of appreciation with an extra spring in his step while Martinelli collapsed to the floor in ecstasy.
It wasn't all hugs and smiles, though. As the City players trudged back towards the away dressing room Kyle Walker, Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish all became embroiled in a row with Arsenal coach Nicolas Jover. The scuffle was ended quickly as Bukayo Saka stepped in as peacemaker before the City players eventually disappeared down the tunnel.
The exact cause of the scuffle remains a mystery. Mikel Arteta channelled his inner Arsene Wenger in his post-match press conference and simply said «I haven’t seen it.» Pep Guardiola was willing to admit he had seen it, but remained elusive on the details, saying «I know what happened but I don't want to say anything.»
Jover is someone who will be well known to Guardiola, though. The Frenchman spent two years on his coaching staff at City between 2019 and 2021. There, he specialised in set-piece coaching and made quite the impression on Arteta, who moved quickly to bring him to the Emirates in the summer of 2021 after the departure of Andreas Georgson
