Former Northern Ireland and Manchester United favourite Sammy McIlroy feels the Red Devils can target title glory
Sammy McIlroy believes Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag would be wise to retain Jonny Evans' services
Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend Sammy McIlroy insists Erik ten Hag’s side should not be dismissed as Premier League title challengers.
United kick off their League campaign at home to Wolves tonight (8pm).
Ten Hag had an impressive first season, making the Champions League places, winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the FA Cup Final, but many observers still believe his panel will not sustain a title assault.
United great McIlroy, who had an incredible 13-year stint at Old Trafford, says his former club can give Treble-winning Manchester City a run for their money.
“You can’t write a club like Manchester United off at all, no matter what has happened,” argued McIlroy, who was famously Sir Matt Busby’s final signing.
“There has been a big improvement, winning a Cup last year and qualifying for the Champions League.
“A few players have come in through the door which has strengthened the squad with real quality.
“You can’t rule United out, not at all. Obviously, it’s a big challenge to win the title – Manchester City have been a dominant force for years and they are the team to beat but everyone is improving.
“Liverpool will be back after their dismal campaign and I expect other sides to improve, like Tottenham under their new manager (Ange Postecoglou).
“United will be stronger and the battle for the top four should be very interesting.”
