Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu will be out until 2025 after undergoing surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon.
The 22-year-old was replaced in the starting eleven late on before Southampton’s Championship clash with Preston at St Mary's, having injured himself during the warm-ups.
"Gavin had an operation yesterday," said manager Russell Martin, his team sitting fourth in the table with four games left.
“He's ruptured his Achilles tendon so it was as bad as we feared. He will be out for around 9 to 10 months.
"I spoke to him before the operation and he wasn’t in a good place but last night he was way more positive. We will rally behind him. We’re really devastated for Gav. But he’ll get through it and be stronger for it. We look forward to seeing him on Monday.
"Gavin has had a huge setback, there will be some dark and lonely moments over the next 10 months. We will support him.”
Bazunu was the established No 1 for Ireland under Stephen Kenny but was facing renewed competition from Caoimhín Kelleher after his expended run in the Liverpool’s team.
By pure misfortune, the new Ireland manager - whenever he’s appointed - will have one less selection dilemma as Bazunu won’t be available for the Uefa Nations League series against England, Greece and Finland from September to November.
Bazunu’s target will be to return for Ireland’s opening World Cup qualifiers in March of next year.
