Andre Onana has revealed he has mentally turned a corner and is now able to 'shine' at Manchester United
The Cameroonian goalkeeper faced intense criticism earlier in the season following a series of high profile blunders in the Champions League.
Mistakes against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray saw Onana's credentials questioned by former United stars, and while he never lost faith in his own ability, it has taken time for him to battle against his mental demons.
'It took me six months or seven months not to play good just to feel good,' he said.
'It was a difficult time for me. Now I'm feeling a bit better. Everything was new, it was difficult for me to feel at home because of so many reasons. Now I'm feeling good.
'For me, the most important thing is to be set, to be happy and I will shine.'
The £47million summer signing was under the microscope before the season even started following a viral clip of him lambasting Harry Maguire during a pre-season match.
Jamie Carragher was among the most vocal critics of Onana on that occasion and with so much pressure on him to hit the ground running as David de Gea's replacement, the 27-year-old accepted that it was a steeper learning curve than he originally anticipated.
Asked if he was mentally beating himself up over each mistake, he said: 'I don't think so but it was just moments, sometimes you are faced with a difficult situation.
'I had a difficult six or seven months just feeling good, not playing good because I didn't think I started to play good. So, it was just something strange, I don't know.
