Ashley Phillips continues to make quite the impression in the Championship ahead of his return to Tottenham this coming summer. Catching the eye in 14 appearances for Blackburn Rovers last season and subsequently seeing Spurs spring into action to bring him to north London on a long-term deal, the Salford-born player is now picking up some more vital experience back in England's second tier with Plymouth Argyle.
Someone head coach Ian Foster knows very well following his time in the England setup, the Pilgrims are now benefiting from the signing of Phillips and that in turn is only going to benefit Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham in the long run as they plan for a big future. Plymouth, just like Spurs, like to build from the back and play an attacking brand of football that is easy on the eye, thus making it the ideal loan move in regards to the player's development.
After making nine successive starts for his new club following his January loan move from Tottenham, Argyle boss Foster elected to give Phillips a well-earned breather for their Championship away game at Middlesbrough ten days ago. Playing the final five minutes of the contest on Teesside, the 18-year-old unfortunately found himself back on the bench for last Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town as a result of their fantastic win at Boro, with Foster, unsurprisingly, electing to name the same team.
However, the ex-Blackburn Rovers man was back in the team for Tuesday's important fixture away at Sheffield Wednesday. Starting on the right of a back three that also contained Lewis Gibson and Brendan Galloway, the youngster made life difficult early on for the Owls and demonstrated his strength up against Wednesday attackers Djeidi Gassama and Ike Ugbo.
