Going into the New Year with a bounce after claiming the Club World Cup and then returning to pick up consecutive Premier League wins, the return of Kevin De Bruyne has everyone seeing City as the team to beat again. Trailing Liverpool by just two points at the top of the table, De Bruyne's magic in turning a 2-1 loss into a 3-2 victory at Newcastle has rubbished expectations that he would need time to settle after five months out.
Pep Guardiola has one of the best players in world football returning for the second half of the season, and will also hope that another two can join him soon in Erling Haaland and John Stones. Jeremy Doku being back gives the City squad even more strength in depth.

It's a cliche to say that a returning player is like a new player, yet on top of the feeling that the champions move through the gears in the second half of the season the bounce provided by De Bruyne has been enough to catapult City into the front of everyone's minds. Unlike last year, their fellow contenders for the Premier League title race have not been able to produce similar.
Arsenal had enjoyed an outstanding first half of the last season, and their January activity spoke of a club determined to hold onto their lead.
