Conor Gallagher proved just why so many clubs are keen on signing him as he put in a man of the match performance to save Chelsea against Crystal Palace. Leaving his first two league goals of the season for a vital time, the former Eagles loanee was on hand to save Mauricio Pochettino from some extremely uncomfortable questions.
It was Gallagher last Wednesday who got things rolling for Chelsea against Aston Villa when many least expected it, lashing in his first of the season with immense confidence, but he saved the most important strikes of his time as a senior member in the squad for when it mattered most. Arriving in the box twice in Old Gallagher style, the 23-year-old picked off his former team to ensure three valuable points.
The two goals mean that it's now three goals in two visits to Selhurst Park since he left Palace in 2022 for Gallagher, including two late winners. It was the icing on the cake for a player that has shown exactly why there is increasing demand from fans for him to be offered a new contract.
Gallagher's current deal ends in less than 18 months with plenty of speculation over his future. The club are open to selling the Cobham graduate, football.london understands, and would have let him go in January for the right price. The player remains keen to fight for his place in the side, though, and put that on full view on Monday.
His form has come via an unorthodox route. Gallagher was loaned out by Chelsea in 2019 to Charlton before making a mid-season switch to Swansea. His first taste of Premier League football came with a terrible West Brom side that were relegated before Palace offered him a way to stamp his name on English football.
Gallagher did just that, scoring eight times under Patrick Vieira.
