Arsenal defender Omar Rekik has mistakenly been left out of Servette's league registration list after joining the Swiss club on loan, which could see him miss the rest of the season.
Rekik, 22, moved to the Geneva-based team in January, hoping for a better experience than his loan spell at Wigan Athletic where an injury limited him to just 14 appearances. However, his hopes have been dashed due to an administrative error.
Swiss news outlet 20 Minutes reported that Servette failed to register Rekik and two other January signings for league matches. «Servette did not send us anything at all,» confirmed David Barras, a spokesperson for the Swiss Super League. Servette responded with a brief statement reading: «We are trying to resolve this administrative issue and we do not wish to react at the moment.»
Although Rekik is registered forEuropa Conference League games, he wasn't included in either squad to face Ludogorets in the round of 32. It now seems likely that the defender will spend the next few months on the sidelines, and will be unable to play for Arsenal if they were to recall him.
Mikel Arteta understandably left the player out of their Premier League and Champions League squads. Rekik has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Gunners.
The versatile defender was brought in by Arsenal from Hertha Berlin in the 2021 summer transfer window for a sum of £600,000. Shortly after signing, he was sent to play for Sparta Rotterdam for the initial part of last season.
