Mikel Arteta will be thankful his Arsenal side have a considerable break from Premier League action following three consecutive defeats. The Gunners were beaten by both West Ham and Fulham either side of 2024 commencing with an FA Cup elimination then coming this past weekend at the hands of Liverpool.
Like many of their Premier League rivals, Arsenal have been hit hard by injuries with a number of players also at the Asia Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations this month. Thomas Partey looked set to be one of those, however the decision was made between Arsenal and Ghana, that he would remain in north London.
Meanwhile, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Mohamed Elneny, despite their recent injury concerns, will represent Japan and Egypt respectively over the coming weeks. Those absences eventually arriving were known to Arteta, however both Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus missing action was certainly not foresighted.
«He had some pain in his knee,» Arteta revealed after the defeat to Liverpool which Jesus missed because of an issue picked up in training. «We have done a scan that shows something. Hopefully it’s not something big. It’s the same knee that he had (an injury on before), so we could not take any risks.»
Zinchenko also missed the game, following on from his absence against Fulham at the start of the year, although Arteta's most recent update suggests it is not serious. «He is progressing well,» Arteta said prior to the Liverpool game. «We have another training session tomorrow, and we will evaluate whether he is available or not to play and start the game.»
