Today’s the day - Aston Villa are one game away from returning to European football for the first time in 13 years.
Unai Emery, his staff and the squad of players are set for a raucous welcome later with fans arriving at Villa Park early to welcome the team bus as it pulls in at the rear of the North Stand.
Villa’s European fate is in their own hands as they go into today’s 4.30pm clash with Brighton in seventh place. Villa will, though, have one eye on the results involving Tottenham at Leeds and Brentford’s home game against champions Man City. Emery’s men are one point ahead of Spurs and two points ahead of the Bees in the race for that Europa Conference League place for next season.
Villa will be without Alex Moreno and Philippe Coutinho today, while injured goalkeeper Jed Steer will officially wave his goodbyes after 10 years’ of service. Villa hero Olof Mellberg will also be at the game later in his first visit in years.
