Bayern chief reacts furiously to officials' apology – "We can’t buy s***!"
Bayern Munich chief Max Eberl has rubbished the apology from the officials after a potential equaliser for his side was ruled out against Real Madrid.
Bayern were knocked out 4-3 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday night in a dramatic 2-1 defeat. Alphonso Davies’ strike had the German team ahead but Joselu scored a quickfire late double to turn things around.
There was controversy, though, with a possible injury-time equaliser by Matthijs de Ligt not allowed. The Bayern defender rifled in, but referee Szymon Marciniak had already blown the whistle, following an offside flag from his assistant Tomasz Listkiewicz against Noussair Mazraoui, who had challenged Ferland Mendy for a header.
The offside call was extremely tight and officials are instructed to keep their flag down in such situations. That protocol was followed at the other end when Antonio Rudiger crossed for what turned out to be Joselu’s winner – with the flag only going up after the ball hit the net, allowing VAR to check – but De Ligt did not get the same courtesy.
Bayern reacted furiously on the pitch at the time and after the final whistle and Thomas Tuchel said he felt “betrayed” by the call. De Ligt explained that Listkiewicz had apologised for the mistake, yet that admission had not helped cool the anger in the Bayern camp.
“There is nothing to explain. There is zero to explain. How many years has the VAR been around? For how many years has this offside rule been this way? This is already highly curious and dubious for me,” Bayern’s director of sport Eberl told reporters. “He whistled, so no video assistant can intervene anymore because it was in front of the goal.
