We have just over a week until Chelsea return to action against Middlesbrough. The Blues are at the beginning of their 10-day winter break period after beating Fulham on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.
Mauricio Pochettino confirmed after the game that he would be flying to Spain to see his family during the break and that his players would be allowed a bit of time off to recharge. «We need some rest for the players, and the staff, also,» Pochettino told reporters at Stamford Bridge.
«It's [been] a really busy period and they need to breathe a little bit. Yes, and then we are going to prepare. We will have seven days to prepare for Middlesbrough. We will then play on the Friday in the FA Cup against Aston Villa and then on Wednesday against Liverpool in the Premier League, so three different competitions. So we need three days off.»
Trying to relax may prove quite difficult for Pochettino, however, with it being the middle of the January transfer window. The Argentine will be in Spain with his family but he will have to make himself available at all times should one of the sporting directors or owners need to contact him over any transfer-related business.
With the club's mind on the off-field matters during this mini winter break, it could be a highly significant period for Chelsea to conduct some business. With that being said, Bobby Vincent takes a look at the dream scenario for Chelsea over the next week or so.
Nicolas Jackson is at the African Cup of Nations representing Senegal at the moment. Chelsea could be without Jackson for over a month altogether should the tournament's reigning champions progress into the latter rounds once again.
