Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi sends clear message over Arsenal penalty

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi had no issues with the penalty that gave Arsenal the lead in their 3-0 defeat at home to the Gunners on Saturday.

The first goal for the visitors came under controversial circumstances, with Bukayo Saka netting from the spot after Gabriel Jesus was brought down in the box. Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey did get a touch on the ball before making contact with the Brazilian, but it wasn't enough for VAR to overturn referee John Brooks' initial decision.

Further goals from Kai Havertz and former Seagull Leandro Trossard in the second half secured the win for Arsenal. The victory propelled them to the top of the table, although Liverpool could reclaim the top spot with a win against Manchester United on Sunday.

Speaking after the game, De Zerbi didn't want to engage in discussions about the opening goal. «The penalty was clear and we move on,» he told Sky Sports.

«The effort was good, good enough to decide this game. We played a good first half, until the second goal we were in the game and then finish. In this moment without a lot of important players, it is tough to create a chance to score.

»We played against Arsenal and they are top of the table. Especially in this condition then we can lose against Arsenal at home. We are sorry for ourselves and our fans."

Brighton's loss sees them slip to 10th place, level with Chelsea on points but trailing on goal difference. However, the Seagulls have a chance to solidify their position in the top half of the table, with upcoming fixtures including a clash at home against Mauricio Pochettino's side.
