With just two wins in their opening 12 Ligue 1 games, Stade Rennais are just one point above the relegation play-off place, currently occupied by FC Lorient. Speaking after the club’s latest defeat, Bruno Genesio acknowledged that his managerial position is in danger.
Rennes received a boost on Thursday, beating Panathinaikos to increase their chances of progression in the UEFA Europa League. However, that form was not carried into Ligue 1 on Sunday. Whilst Les Rennais were strong favourites heading into their meeting against Olympique Lyonnais, Guéla Doué’s red card in the fifth minute allowed Fabio Grosso’s side to play over 85 minutes with a numerical advantage.
OL took a while to make that advantage count, however, they eventually did so through Jake O’Brien. Lyon held on to take the three points and secure their first victory of the season, although they still remain bottom of Ligue 1. “When you have two wins in 12 matches, you know you’re in danger. That’s the manager’s job,” reacted Genesio in a post-match interview with Prime Video Sport.
According to RMC Sport, Genesio’s job is indeed at risk. The publication reports that discussions regarding the former OL manager’s position will be held in the coming days. An official position is set to be taken next week.
