The ink is barely dry on the Olympique de Marseille statement that confirmed David Friio’s departure, however, the former OM sporting director looks set to join arch-rivals Olympique Lyonnais, according to L’Équipe, RMC Sport and Foot Mercato.
Friio’s Marseille departure was an inevitability. He was another victim of the restructuring at the club and followed Javier Ribalta in leaving OM. He is likely to be replaced by Medhi Benatia, who will take up the role of sporting consultant.
However, Friio won’t be out of work for long. As indicated by multiple media, he will soon join OL as the club’s sporting director. His arrival does not exclude the possibility of Juninho also joining the club. In fact, the Brazilian, who occupied the sporting director role as recently as 2021, looks set to return as a sporting consultant.
John Textor waited for Friio to officialise his departure from Les Phocéens before opening discussions with the Frenchman, who has previously had a spell at Manchester United. Now that he is no longer attached to Lyon’s Ligue 1 rivals, negotiations are advancing quickly.
