Armando Broja has revealed it was him who was set to take the fifth penalty for Chelsea in their shootout win over Newcastle United on Tuesday night. The Blues progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after beating the Magpies 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes.
Callum Wilson handed Newcastle the lead on 16 minutes, with the striker capitalising on some poor defending from Chelsea to send the visiting supporters crazy in the Shed End at Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea controlled the second half and were parked in the Magpies' half as they searched for an equaliser.
It looked like it was not going to come for Mauricio Pochettino and his team but Mykhailo Mudryk was on hand to fire in a stoppage time equaliser for the hosts. Chelsea then scored 100% of their penalties in the shootout with Newcastle missing two of their efforts from 12 yards.
Kieran Trippier put his penalty wide of Djordje Petrovic's goal to pile on his own misery after he made the mistake that led to Mudryk levelling the game. Matt Ritchie took what turned out to be Newcastle's final penalty, with Petrovic producing a fantastic save to tip the ball away from the goal.
The Serbian goalkeeper's efforts meant there was no time for Chelsea to take their fifth penalty. Broja, who came on for Enzo Fernandez in the first half in SW6, was the man ready to step up and put Chelsea into the last four. His teammate, however, denied him that opportunity.
