Bukayo Saka has been Arsenal's designated penalty kick taker for the last two seasons but it seems the England international has now been replaced
Bukayo Saka has been dealt a surprise snub after being removed as Arsenal's penalty taker. Gunners captain Martin Odegaard took on the responsibility of converting from the penalty spot during the Premier League clash against Crystal Palace this evening.
Arsenal are currently 1-0 up against the Eagles after Eddie Nketiah was brought down inside the penalty box by Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Saka has been the Gunners' designated penalty kick taker for the last two seasons but it now seems he has been replaced by Odegaard.
That result contributed to Arsenal missing out on the Premier League title as they dropped points in their battle with Manchester City - eventually going on to finish in second place by five points. The England international's missed spot kick four months ago may have been the moment that a decision was made to change penalty takers at the Emirates Stadium.
Only time will tell whether this is a permanent change. Shortly after Odegaard opened the scoring for Arsenal, Takehiro Tomiyasu was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The Japanese defender was initially booked for time wasting under the new rulings brought in by the Premier League. Tomiyasu then received a second booking for a shirt pull, reducing the Gunners to ten men for the remaining 20 minutes.
