Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have had their say on the red card Takehiro Tomiyasu picked up during Arsenal's victory over Crystal Palace on Monday night. The Gunners defender was sent off in the second half after picking up two controversial yellow cards.
The Japan star picked up a soft yellow card for a foul on Jordan Ayew just seven minutes after being cautioned for perceived time-wasting at a throw-in. The new remit for officiating this season has called, among other changes, for a clampdown on time-wasting and referee David Coote deemed the 24-year-old to be doing just that at Selhurst Park.
However, the decision to give a yellow card to Tomiyasu was perhaps a little harsh due to Kai Havertz initially taking his time on the throw-in before passing the ball to the defender. Replays show the Japanese international had the ball in his hands for eight seconds before he was booked for time-wasting.
Luckily for Mikel Arteta the decision did not have an impact on the game, with the Gunners winning 1-0 thanks to a Martin Odegaard penalty. After the match, former Manchester United defender Neville analysed the sending off.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: «Obviously the first yellow is something, but then he goes past him and has a little bit of a tug of the shirt, but what I would say on the first yellow, we went to see Howard Webb a couple of weeks ago and the laws of the game are there to prevent time wasting and that is called a yellow card and leads to a red card. But, if you go at defenders and other players for time wasting, this will have a bigger impact on players wasting time than it will be adding 15 minutes on at the end.»
