Burnley rejected chance to sign Manchester United summer signing Sergio Reguilon
Burnley chief operating officer Matt Williams says the Clarets were in talks to sign Sergio Reguilon before his loan switch to Manchester United.
The Tottenham left-back joined United on deadline day amid significant injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Reguilon stayed on the bench in the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal before the international break but could make his debut against Brighton today.
The Spaniard was loaned out to Atletico Madrid last season but played only 11 La Liga games, starting just two. A move to Vincent Kompany’s Burnley was discussed in the final week of the transfer window before the club backed out due to fees and wages. Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, Burnley chief Williams indicated it was Tottenham who approached those at Turf Moor about a potential deal.

“Left-backs are a bit of a rarity. Look at Manchester United – one of the biggest clubs in world football,” he said. “Luke Shaw goes down injured and they take a player from Tottenham who we’d been offered three or four days earlier. It was a business decision that we didn’t sign him – salaries, loan fees etc.”
Shaw’s injury has not been specified but he may not return until November. The nature of Malacia’s issue has also not been disclosed having missed the whole of pre-season with his problem.
Diogo Dalot filled in at left-back in their absences, including against Arsenal with Reguilon only arriving 18 hours earlier. United were also in talks for Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella but terms could not be agreed.
