New Manchester United signing Sergio Reguilon could have joined Burnley – but they turned down the chance to sign him.
An injury to Luke Shaw saw United forced into the transfer window to find a replacement left-back.
Several options were touted with time running out before the deadline passed, including Chelsea star Marc Cucurella and Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso.
But Erik ten Hag eventually settled on signing Reguilon from Tottenham on loan until the end of the season.
However, the Spaniard could have joined Burnley after Spurs offered his services to the Lancashire outfit.
The Clarets, though, decided against snapping up the Spaniard due to the finances around the deal.
That is despite Burnley looking to sign a left-back having seen a move for Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen fall through.
The Clarets could not work out the finances in time having been offered Reguilon days before United made their move.
Burnley’s chief operating officer Matt Williams said: “Left-backs are a bit of a rarity. Look at Manchester United – one of the biggest clubs in world football.
“Luke Shaw goes down injured and they take a player from Tottenham who we’d been offered three or four days earlier.
“It was a business decision that we didn’t sign him – salaries, loan fees etc.”
Shaw is expected to miss several weeks of action after suffering a muscle injury in training last month.
The England international has not been given an exact return date but it could be next month.
Diogo Dalot has deputised at left-back in his absence with Tyrell Malacia also missing with an unspecified injury picked up over the summer.
United made several moves in the transfer window, including Reguilon, who joined on Deadline Day.
