Carabao Cup VAR and penalty shootout rules explained as Arsenal and Chelsea prepare for ties

The third round of the Carabao Cup will come to an end this evening as teams continue their road to Wembley. Nine ties will commence on Wednesday evening with Arsenal and Chelsea in action.

Mikel Arteta's side make the short trip across the capital to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium looking to extend their unbeaten start to the 2023/24 season.

Chelsea, who have failed to score in their last three games, host Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge. There are a number of eye-catching ties throughout the competition with Liverpool taking on Leicester City at Anfield and Manchester City travelling to Newcastle United.

Seven teams secured their spot in the fourth round last night, including Manchester United, Burnley, League One duo Port Vale and Exeter City and League Two outfit Mansfield Town.

Fans will notice that VAR isn't in use throughout this round of the competition, meaning that all Premier League grounds will not have video technology present, despite being used in the top flight. The reason behind the decision is because the EFL are keen to ensure every team has an equal chance.

Football League teams do not use VAR in the Championship, League One and League Two meaning it is deemed unfair to use the technology. The technology is, however, used in the two-legged semi-finals, as well as the final.

Another rule that some supporters may not be used to is the procedure after 90 minutes. In years gone by, a period of 30 minutes' extra-time is played out and a penalty shoot-out commences if the teams are level.

However, the
