Fifty days have passed since Chelsea pulled out of the race to sign Manuel Ugarte from Sporting CP after Paris Saint-Germain took the initiative and ended up signing the midfielder.
Chelsea swiftly turned their attention to Moises Caicedo from Brighton, someone they were interested in signing over the January transfer window. Instead the club ended up splashing over £100million to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica, but almost six months on from bringing the Argentine to England, Chelsea are once again in for Caicedo.
Ever since the club turned their focus onto signing Caicedo, it has proven to be frustrating for Chelsea. Everyone knows Brighton are tough negotiators but even the most pessimistic person at Chelsea would have thought some significant progress was made at this point in time.
The Blues are expected to bid once again for Caicedo eventually despite already seeing two offers turned down by the Seagulls. There is still a confidence Chelsea will get their man but there does not seem to be a quick solution available.
Caicedo is Chelsea's priority signing this summer. If the Blues can add the Ecuadorian to their midfield, alongside the brilliant Fernandez, then there is much more of a chance Mauricio Pochettino can make this side competitive once again.
Bring an energetic midfielder like Caicedo alongside Fernandez and it looks brilliant. On paper, anyway. Pochettino likes to play with a two-man pivot in a 4-2-3-1 formation, like we have already seen in pre-season.
