Chelsea great Frank Lampard in line for shock return to management with World Cup co-hosts
Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is reportedly in the mix to become the new manager of Canada national team. Lampard has been biding his time since an interim spell back at Stamford Bridge at the end of last season.
The former England and Chelsea midfielder, who was sacked by Everton midway through the 2022-23 campaign, won just one of his nine games while in temporary charge. Canada, who will co-host the2026 World Cup with the United States and Mexico, are guaranteed a spot at the expanded tournament.
They have yet to decide on a permanent manager for the campaign, though, with Mauro Biello in interim charge since September 2023. And now, according to The Telegraph, Lampard is among a number of names on the shortlist to eventually take permanent charge.
Lampard has been waiting for the right opportunity to resume his managerial career. While it is unclear whether Canada would fit that description, the national FA are said to be interested in speaking to the Englishman.
«Yeah enjoying being with the family and looking to get back at some point,» Lampard told talkSPORT in early March. «Hopefully something comes up that feels the right thing for me, I'm keen to get working again but as I reiterate, I am enjoying the [family life].»
«I've enjoyed all the clubs I've worked with, they've all been big challenges obviously for different reasons,» he added. «I enjoy trying to work with players, improve players, improve teams, so let's see what comes.»
