Chelsea owners make huge $500m decision amid crucial transfer window

Chelsea's owners have reportedly decided to approach investors about potentially buying a stake in the club.

The financial news outlet Bloomberg reports that the Blues have spoken to interested parties about a move, which could see fresh investment into the club just over a year since its current owners took over. It is reported that any investment could see the Blues get a cash injection of up to £395 million ($500m) with the summer transfer window still in full swing.

Chelsea were taken over by an ownership group made up of Todd Boehly, the Clearlake Capital investors run by Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss. The Blues have spent over £600m in the transfer market since last summer and are without broadcast revenue from European football participation this season after a dismal 12th-placed finish last campaign.

They are also hamstrung by their Stamford Bridge stadium, which has a much lower capacity than their rivals and thus the ability to generate money on a matchday. Boehly and his partners have a long-term vision which includes the redevelopment of the club's stadium as well as a massive growth of their commercial strategy, which will in turn boost revenues and allow them to be sustainable.

There is no panic at Chelsea just yet, though, with Boehly fully behind the project and confident things will work out. «You know, they want to win and we get that,» he said of his club's supporters.
