Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic are not the typical underdog. They have been around longer than anyone else in La Liga, save the big three they have more titles than anyone else, and a stadium that houses over 53,000 fans, but nobody expected them to be temporarily third or fourth with their squad. A squad that is not mediocre by any means, but the critique that they cannot compete with their Basque-only policy continues to be thrown at them. The reality is, they can.
