David Marshall has pleaded with Hibs and Hearts fans to cut out the missile mayhem before the Edinburgh derby suffers an away fan lockout like the Old Firm.
The Easter Road keeper was caught in the line of fire as objects including lighters and a bottle opener were lobbed from the Hibees end towards Lawrence Shankland as the Jambos skipper waited to take a first half penalty on Wednesday. Hibs playmaker Emiliano Marcondes was also targeted by home supporters as he waited to take a corner.
The clubs are working together to identify those responsible. But Marshall fears the culprits not only crossed the line but are jeopardising one of the best atmospheres in Scottish football. He said: “Some of the stuff thrown on could cause serious injury. It soured the fact that it was such a good atmosphere. The players love playing in it. The Edinburgh derby is huge and with the attendance from both sets of fans that the Old Firm doesn’t get it generates such an atmosphere.
“It’s hostile, it’s good. But there’s a line that was crossed on Wednesday. It’s difficult to manage. It’s not Hearts’ fault or the stewards’ fault that people are chucking things on.
“Luckily there were no injuries. Hopefully we can put an end to stuff like that because the last thing we want is to see fan attendances and that atmosphere affected in any way.”
Marshall turns 39 next week and admits he hasn’t yet decided whether this season will be his last as a professional. The former Celtic and Scotland keeper has seen Joe Hart, two years his junior, make an early call on hanging up the gloves this summer.
But Marshall knows one thing for sure - he wants to land the Scottish Cup with Hibs before making a decision on his future. There’s also a top six spot to fight for
