Declan Rice and Gabriel Martinelli fire clear Aaron Ramsdale Arsenal message amid injury worry
Arsenal's players were quick to show their love for Aaron Ramsdale after he played a big role in the eventual 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday. For better and worse, the English goalkeeper was at the centre of the action.
Having dallied on the ball for too long at the end of the first half with his side a goal to the good,Ramsdale fired his clearance into the onrushing Yoane Wissa and saw it end up in his own net. This led to a second 45 minutes of angst and anxiety for the home crowd as their chance to go top of the table — even temporarily — looked to be slipping.
Kai Havertz saved the day with less than five minutes to go, heading in a winner for Mikel Arteta's men. It saved Ramsdale's blushes as he returned to the team for a first Premier League game in 2024.
He hadn't featured since the FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in January — in which he was criticised for his role in two of the goals — and only made the team here with David Raya unavailable against his former side. His last league game was also against the Bees and needed a similarly dramatic Havertz header to get the points.
This was eventually Ramsdale's day though and several high-profile second-half saves helped to secure the victory. As a deeply popular member of the squad, it is notable just how much they expressed their appreciation of the 25-year-old online afterwards.
Replying to Ramsdale's Instagram post, Declan Rice wrote, «Kept us in it brother we stick together [red heart emoji]» whilst Emile Smith Rowe, Jurrien Timber, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Willian Saliba also added hearts to the comments. Ian Wright also joined in, as did Women's star Beth Mead.
