Speaking at the French Football Association’s headquarters in Paris, France manager Didier Deschamps addressed the ongoing issue of violence in French football, calling for more severity in punishments. The following was transcribed live by Get French Football News.
“We have to make sure it [violence] doesn’t happen again. That requires collaboration between all the people who have to make decisions to ensure that safety is as important as possible. Even so, there certainly needs to be a little more severity in the penalties to act as a deterrent.”
“This concerns very few people, but it only takes one person to call everything into question. These people have no place in the sporting environment. They use the sporting sphere and obviously the media coverage of their actions. Obviously, we need to think hard about how we can combat this so that we don’t have to face situations like this again.”
Deschamps’ comments follow the Ligue de Football Professionel‘s announcement of a date for the replayed fixture of Olympique de Marseille against Olympique Lyonnais, following the injury of coach Fabio Grosso after an attack on Les Gones’ team bus. The decision to play the match in the same conditions as before has prompted Lyon to appeal against the league governing body.
