Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery (17) has said that he is “staying true to himself” after receiving his first call-up to the France squad.
Zaïre-Emery’s rise has been meteoric. Having broken into the PSG team under Christophe Galtier last season, he has consolidated his place under Luis Enrique, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet. The ‘Titi Parisien’ also wore the armband for the France U21 side, garnering high praise from manager Thierry Henry, who said that “the sky’s the limit’ for the young Zaïre-Emery.
It therefore came as no surprise that Zaïre-Emery was fast-tracked into the senior side. Didier Deschamps confirmed in October that the PSG midfielder was on his radar. His first call-up was then confirmed on Thursday and Zaïre-Emery will therefore join the rest of Les Bleus in Clairefontaine early next week.
Speaking for the first time since his call-up, Zaïre-Emery gave his reaction. “I am very happy. I’m very proud. It shows that he (Didier Deschamps) trusts me as well. I’m staying true to myself and more than anything it’s about working hard every day, which I do. I’m lost for words; I’m very happy,” he told Prime Video Sport after PSG’s 3-0 victory against Stade de Reims on Saturday.
France face Gibraltar and Greece during the upcoming international break, during which he will be hoping to make his debut in Bleu and stake a claim for a spot in France’s Euro 2024 squad at the end of the season, for which Deschamps admitted that Zaïre-Emery is a candidate.
