For the first time in 30 years, the world’s most popular football-based video game will not be called FIFA.
EA Sports had previously paid a licensing fee of $150million (£114.6m) per year to FIFA to use its name, but the biggest governing body in the sport then asked for double that amount, so the two parted ways.

After the split, there were plenty of questions about what EA Sports would do with its football game next. The answer is EA FC24, which will be released on September 29.
The Athletic has been to Amsterdam to test out the pre-beta version and find out what will be different. Here, we run through all the key questions and answers, outlining everything we know so far.
At the pre-beta launch event in the Dutch city of Amsterdam, attended by Manchester City star Erling Haaland, one of the biggest talking points was how different FC24 will turn out to be from its predecessor, FIFA 23.
EA Sports made FIFA 23; FIFA provided the name. So major deviation for EA Sports was unlikely — video-game franchises rarely introduce major overhauls from one year to the next.
And indeed, FC24 is no different. It has a similar feel to FIFA but with some new features to mark a new era.
FC24 has three notable gameplay changes from FIFA 23 — Hypermotion V, an enhanced Frostbite Engine, and PlayStyles.
