Arsenal came away from their clash against Manchester United with more than just three points, they had also inflicted an incredible amount of anger and angst on their opposition manager Erik ten Hag. In his post-match press conference, he went through the four moments that he felt were officiated incorrectly and ultimately the reason why they lost – outside of being outplayed for the majority of the game as United tried the sole strategy of hitting on the counter.
«Let's start with the penalty given but rejected, not get booked for it, then foul on Hojlund in the penalty area, not even by the VAR, and then disallowed goal from Garnacho; I think wrong angle, and I think it's onside. The final goal—how can they allow that goal? It's a clear foul on Jonny Evans from the shot by Rice; it's a lot.»
Ten Hag spoke frustratedly at these incidents but is he right?football.london takes a look at all four accusations of mistakes to see whether the Dutchman has a case.
This was not a penalty. The same as when Danilo made minor contact with Marcus Rashford in Manchester United’s narrow victory over Nottingham Forest, this was given but VAR overturned. This however is not what Ten Hag is annoyed by.
He claims that Havertz should have been booked at the moment for diving. The referee can choose to book a player in retrospect but Anthony Taylor did not.
Rightly so too considering there was sufficient contact to avoid claims of a dive and instead Havertz used the excuse of contact to go down, exaggerate contact and try and win a penalty as we see so often. It isn’t a penalty, but it isn’t a dive and therefore that is: VAR 1-0 ten Hag.
