Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist aiming a dig at Erik ten Hag after Manchester United’s nightmare season hit a new low, and even pulled sparring partner Gary Neville into it.
The Red Devils hit a new historical low on Saturday as they lost 2-0 to West Ham and produced another miserable performance that leaves little hope for the future.
Defeat at the London Stadium meant United have lost more games before Christmas this term (13) than any season since 1930/31 (16) — a campaign where they finished bottom of the top-flight and were relegated.
It also marked the first time since 1992 the Premier league giants had failed to score in four straight games — highlighting their huge problem in attack with £72million striker Rasmus Hoijland making it 14 league appearances without a goal.
The pressure is on Ten Hag like never before, with unhappy supporters only likely to be more incensed by the manager’s post-match comments where he praised a ‘solid’ performance that, according to him, only lacked goals.
And Carragher only stoked the fire after the game as he responded to a post on social media comparing United’s stats this season to Neville’s doomed spell in charge of Valencia.
The former defender’s move from punditry to the dugout in Spain is widely regarded as one of the worst managerial spells in football history, with Neville sacked after just four months.
Remarkably, though, his record with Valencia is better then Ten Hag’s in charge of United this season — and that’s after signing over £400million worth of new players under the Dutch coach.
Which all led to Carragher posting on X, formerly Twitter: “Give it to Gary until the end of the season.”
