Joe Thomas: The biggest game of the season requires some big characters. Club captain Seamus Coleman has to start for me. He would come in for Ben Godfrey and round off a solid back four. Everything in front of that defensive unit is a bit more complicated. James Garner, Andre Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped to change the game at Newcastle United and all deserve some thought.
Abdoulaye Doucoure has struggled since picking up the first of two hamstring injuries in the win at Burnley before Christmas but he is so important to this team reaching its top level that he keeps his spot for me. Idrissa Gueye does too, leaving a battle between Amadou Onana and Garner.
Onana’s fitness was to be assessed on Friday. If there are any concerns then he comes out, but if he’s available then he starts for me.

Jack Harrison comes in for Ashley Young because Everton have to be assertive here and try and go for a win rather than protect the defence and take anything else as a bonus. After his goal at St James’ Park, I start Calvert-Lewin ahead of Beto in the hope the breaking of his drought might start a run that can help pull Everton to safety.
My team (4-5-1): Pickford; Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Coleman; McNeil, Gueye, Onana, Doucoure, Harrison; Calvert-Lewin
Chris Beesley: The fact that it came from the penalty spot doesn’t matter, after finally returning to the scoresheet at Newcastle United after 23 matches without a goal, Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to be restored to the starting line-up to spearhead Everton’s attack for their ‘must-win’ game with Burnley.
