Calvert-Lewin’s big chance
Everton fought to have Dominic Calvert-Lewin available for this game, appealing against his red card at Crystal Palace and in the eyes of seemingly everyone in the football world other than Chris Kavanagh (who thought is challenge was fine in real time) and VAR, common sense prevailing with the decision being overturned but ultimately the striker was unable to take advantage of his reprieve.
The Blues number nine gave his all leading the line but ultimately only one opportunity would come his way but boy was it an inviting one. Picked out by Arnaut Danjuma, Calvert-Lewin found himself one-on-one with Emiliano Martinez – who had even had his back to play when the centre-forward picked up possession – but he shot too close to the Aston Villa goalkeeper.
Calvert-Lewin’s chance was eerily similar to the one he converted when these sides last met in the Carabao Cup in September. However, back then he was facing former team-mate Robin Olsen whereas here he was up against the Argentinian World Cup winner, who might well have had a psychological edge on him after their collision in August that forced the Everton player to leave the field with a facial injury.
Back in October, the 26-year-old became only the fourth player to reach the 50-goal mark in the Premier League for the Blues when he netted the winner at West Ham United, but he’s now gone 13 games without scoring. Given his pedigree, hopefully they’ll start to flow again soon and at least now he’s staying fit.
