According to L’Équipe and RMC Sport, Fabio Grosso has been sacked as manager of Olympique Lyonnais. The Italian related Laurent Blanc in September but only managed one win in his seven games in charge.
Grosso received the public backing of owner John Textor last week, amidst rumours of Jorge Sampaoli’s arrival at the club, however, last weekend’s defeat to Lille OSC has proved to be the nail in the coffin for Grosso. His position in the dressing room had reportedly been weakened due to his treatment of some key players, notably Alexandre Lacazette and Rayan Cherki, who have been dropped in recent weeks.
Following a meeting with the DNCG earlier this week, Textor confirmed that he would be meeting with Grosso to discuss the future and the decision has now seemingly been made. David Friio, whose arrival at OL is yet to be confirmed, also played a part in the decision, according to L’Équipe.
The head of the youth academy, Pierre Sage will take charge on an interim basis, and will be on the touchline for the match against RC Lens on Saturday, and likely for the trip to Marseille next Wednesday.
According to RMC Sport, former manager Bruno Genesio, Sampaoli and Igor Tudor all feature on OL’s shortlist to replace the outgoing Grosso.
