Tiernan Lynch says it’s vital not to lose focus over the festive period
Carrick Rangers defender Albert Watson is a youth coach at Larne
Tiernan Lynch has joked that he will fall out with Albert Watson if he hurts Larne on Boxing Day, but the humour will quickly fade to the background as the intriguing and tense title race hots up.
The Invermen enjoyed their Christmas dinner after a 1-0 win at home to Loughgall on Friday but there is little rest in a punishing title defence.
The Gers, with Larne youth coach Watson in their ranks, are thirsty for their own taste of festive cheer.
Former Linfield favourite Watson thought about retiring in the summer but Carrick gave him an opportunity he couldn’t refuse.
The experienced defender took up a new full-time role as head coach of the Invermen’s Under-16 side after helping the club land its first Premiership crown.
The 38-year-old spent 10 years at Ballymena United, where he played alongside Carrick boss Stuart King.
Larne chief Lynch is hoping his good pal and League and Cup double winner at the Blues is not able to dent the Invermen’s title bid.
“Albert can play against us again and if he scores and plays well, he will not be welcome back with us,” joked Lynch.
“He’s a top lad and no-one can argue with what he has achieved in his career. He’s been a real Irish League stalwart and hopefully he can bring that success into his coaching career.
“This is a big period for all the teams. Families demand your time and there’s a temptation to lose focus over the holiday period. You can’t do that, you must be on it.
“Players are given plans and presentations and you mustn’t be distracted.
“In the January window, we will look to bring one or two in but I don’t feel it will be a mad time.”
