Nottingham Forest 0 Liverpool 1
Jurgen Klopp did not see any reason for a discussion surrounding the controversy at the end of Liverpool’s chaotic win over Nottingham Forest at The City Ground.
Frustration stemmed from a Forest perspective when play was stopped after Ibrahima Konate went down in the Liverpool box with a supposed head injury. Callum Hudson-Odoi was in possession of the ball but, when play stopped, Luiz Diaz kicked the ball back toward the Liverpool goal.
To the bemusement of everyone related to the home side, play then restarted with an uncontested drop ball that was given to Caoimhín Kelleher.
The International Football Association Board — which determines the rules of the game — states in law 8.2 that “the referee drops the ball for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the position where it last touched a player.”
In that case, the ball should have been returned to Nottingham Forest as they were in possession when play was halted. Klopp was not as bewildered as the Forest contingent and pointed out that the exact same situation occurred in the first half, but the other way around.
When prompted about the incident the Liverpool boss said: “It happened exactly the same in the first half, didn’t it? “It was exactly the same just the other way around, right? I expected it to happen like that because it happened in the first half like that. If it did not happen to us in the first half, I would have asked the question as well. But I would now assume that is the rule. I don’t know to be honest. I was unsure but because it happened twice and twice it got handled in the exact same way, I don’t really see the reason for the discussions. I don’t know how many passes we had to play to arrive there
