Former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has explained why he has signed for newly-promoted Luton Town.
Barkley will wear the number six shirt for the Hatters in their first-ever Premier League campaign after securing promotion, via the playoffs, last season. He returns to the English top-flight after becoming a free agent following a short spell with Ligue 1 side, OGC Nice.
Barkley left Goodison Park in 2018 for Chelsea, with the Stamford Bridge outfit paying £15m for his services. The transfer brought an end to his long-standing affiliation with Everton.
His time in the capital was a forgettable one as he made just 100 appearances in four years with a loan spell at Aston Villa during the 2020-21 season. He left Chelsea by mutual consent at the beginning of last season and signed a short-term deal in France.

He arrives in time to be eligible for Luton's Premier League opener, with Rob Edwards' side getting their campaign underway away to Brighton & Hove Albion. Barkley credited the Hatters' astronomical rise from the National League to the Premier League as one of the reasons behind him deciding move to Kenilworth Road.
"Why Luton? Going from the Conference to the Premier League is a great story and for me personally to be back in the Premier League, it’s great motivation," he said.
"I’m still relatively young and over the last couple of years I’ve not played as much as I’d have liked. But I’ve reserved a lot of energy and looked after myself, so it’s great to be here now as I’ve got a lot to show but I’m ready and feeling
