Galway United have 'apologised unreservedly' for posting an image of a player who has been banned from driving following an incident which resulted in the death of a father of two, holding a STOP traffic sign.
The post was accompanied by the song ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ on social media.
The League of Ireland club, who return to the top flight this week, distributed the image of Ed McCarthy ahead of their season opener with St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday.
"Galway United wish to advise that there was no offence intended by a recent social media post issued by the club," a statement released on Thursday states, "and would like to unreservedly apologise for any hurt or distress that the post may have caused."
The picture, which was accompanied by Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s recently-revived hit, was ultimately deleted.
McCarthy was given a two-year suspended sentence and a seven-year driving ban after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Polish national, Andrzej Obalek in February 2020.
Then a 19-year-old Cork City player, he admitted he was speeding when he caused the death of the 55-year-old in Buttevant.
McCarthy joined John Caulfield's Galway outfit two years ago after spells with Treaty United, Kidderminster Harriers and his time at Turner's Cross.
