Gary Lineker says Zvonimir Boban is a man with «principles and dignity» following his decision to quit his role as UEFA's technical director in protest after president Aleksander Ceferin signalled his intention to remain in charge beyond a third term. The decision comes just days after an interview with Ceferin was released in which he stated he firmly believed Manchester City had been guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play rules.
«We know we were right,» Ceferin said in a recent interview with the Telegraph about UEFA's decision to charge City for breaking the FFP rules despite the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturning the ban in 2018. While teams like Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea wait for the outcome of the supposed 'trial of the century,' UEFA continue to see things change.
The former Milan and Croatia midfielder Boban left his post in protest to the president's latest moves. Ceferin succeeded Michel Platini in 2016 and one of the reforms he put in place was a three-term limit for all executive appointments.
Ceferin is due to step down in 2027 after being re-elected via no opposition last year, he is campaigning to stay until 2031. Boban called the move «fatal and beyond comprehension.» An open letter published in the Croatian news outlet Telegram on Thursday, read: «I talked to Uefa’s president about a problem that occurred during the last meeting of the executive committee in Hamburg – the proposal to change Uefa’s statute in order to enable Ceferin’s new candidacy after his final mandate runs out.
