Gregg Berhalter earns 900,000-dollar bonus after meeting Qatar 2022 minimum requirement

US Soccer demanded the team at least qualify for the Round of 16, and that's what the USMNT did

The United States made it to the last 16 of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where they were eliminated by the Netherlands with a resounding 3-1 defeat.

However, amidst this situation, coach Gregg Berhalter received a bonus of 900,000 dollars, sparking criticism on social media.

Berhalter received a salary of 1.3 million dollars for coaching the USMNT at the last World Cup, but he also earned a bonus of 900,000 dollars on top of that after leading the team to the round of 16.

In essence, Berhalter met US Soccer's minimum requirement and still received a hefty bonus, despite leaving the team due to a domestic violence controversy.

With the bonuses he received for both qualification and performance, Berhalter's earnings grew to nearly 2.3 million dollars in 2022.

The United States is a regular participant in FIFA World Cups, often advancing to the next round after the group stage. Therefore, securing a spot in the Round of 16 is no longer a goal, but rather the bare minimum. This is why Berhalter's 900,000-dollar bonus has drawn criticism.

USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski had a base salary of 396,089 dollars in 2022 and earned a 15,000-dollar bonus for his performance, which included maintaining the women's team's consistent top-three ranking in the world.

Andonovski and the USWNT were a significant disappointment at the 2023 Women's World Cup, but they still made it to the round of 16. The 2023 fiscal records for the USMNT and USWNT will not be released until next year.
