Liverpool Women’s legend Natasha Dowie has lifted the lid on her role in ‘Klopp’s Kids’’ Carabao Cup triumph.
Several of Liverpool’s academy players featured in the Reds’ League Cup win at Wembley, also helping Jurgen Klopp’s side triumph in the FA Cup and Premier League in recent games. Dowie, who retired as the women’s team’s all-time top scorer last year, now serves as the club’s first women’s ambassador but works across the Reds’ teams.
“I do a bit of mentoring at the under 18s,” Dowie, who was speaking at the Copa del Cure Leukaemia tournament in partnership with Women in Football, said.
“I have worked with the men's Academy. So, to see the likes of Jayden Danns stepping up, getting his first goal for Liverpool, winning the League Cup, and getting his debut within a week it was brilliant for me.
“And it was really nice to see his family all there, and really proud of him. I'm the first female ambassador to work within AXA, and my work has mainly been mentoring the boys, talking to them, sharing my story, giving them a bit of advice.
“Yes, they're at Liverpool, they're obviously very good players, but more so advising them on the next steps. If they make it, if they don't make it, the journey I've been on as a pro for 25 years, the ups and downs I've had, how to deal with setbacks, just trying to keep them grounded and humble really.
“But the academy does an amazing job of that anyway and you can see the number of young players that are coming into the first team and how they adapt. Hats off to [academy director] Alex Inglethorpe and what he has done at Liverpool.”
Dowie enjoyed two spells at Liverpool as a player, helping them to two Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014 before joining head coach Matt Beard
