Federico Valverde has admitted that he never figured out how to stop Lionel Messi.
The 25-year-old became a first team regular at Real Madrid during Messi's latter years with Barcelona, while also pitting his wits against him when the Argentine star joined Paris Saint-Germain.
As well as facing off at club level, the Uruguayan midfielder has faced Messi numerous times when representing Argentina, meaning that he's plenty of opportunities to try and work out how to stop the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Unfortunately, having a plan to stop Messi is one thing; actually doing so is another thing entirely.
Valverde said: «I don't know how to do it.
»I could never stop him. We had many Clasicos, and Casemiro was always a good weapon against Messi. Although not always.
«You have to respect him because he is one of the best players in the world.»
Casemiro was Real Madrid's anchorman in midfield for nine years and was regularly tasked with stopping Barcelona's talisman in his pomp.
The topic of football's GOAT is one of significant debate, with Messi one of the serious contenders alongside legendary figures including Pele, Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
But recently asked if he considers himself to be the best, Messi said: «As I always said, I do not know if I am the best player in history or not.
»If I am one of the best, then this is a wonderful thing."
