Josh Magennis' goal against San Marino moved him into Northern Ireland's top-10
Josh Magennis says representing Northern Ireland continues to mean everything to him and he is intent on playing for his country for as long as possible — potentially all the way to the Euro 2028 Finals.
The 33-year-old striker was speaking to Sunday Life Sport after moving into the nation’s top 10 all-time goal scorers’ list thanks to his 11th international strike in yesterday’s 3-0 victory over San Marino at Windsor Park.
Only David Healy (36 goals), Kyle Lafferty (20), Colin Clarke (13), Steven Davis (13), Billy Gillespie (13), Gerry Armstrong (12), Joe Bambrick (12), Iain Dowie (12) and Jimmy Quinn (12) are ahead of him.
Magennis has won 74 caps and, although he wasn’t always a starter during Michael O’Neill’s successful first spell in charge, in many ways with his enthusiasm and passion, the Wigan Athletic ace was the spirit of that side forever revered as the Kings of Lyon.
Second time around, O’Neill is grateful to have the forward’s experience and his ability to snatch crucial goals.
In turn, Magennis is still leaving it all out on the pitch every time he puts on a green shirt.
“It is always an honour to play for Northern Ireland and to be able to get up to those players on the goalscoring list is jaw-dropping for me. There are some names there,” says Magennis with a sense of pride.
“I love playing for my country. It is absolutely everything. I’m a Northern Irish boy and I’ve been blessed beyond belief to see every side of it from when we weren’t winning to the highs of the Euros and the Play-Offs.
“You can never take this for granted. Just because I’m fit and available doesn’t mean you are a shoo-in to play.
