'I was in the same tunnel' - Tottenham star admits he was intimidated by Liverpool
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has named two Liverpool heroes as his footballing idols.
The Reds were consistently linked with a move for the Brighton man, prior to him joining Spurs in 2022. Bissouma was a standout performer under then-manager Graham Potter and his performances reportedly placed him firmly on Liverpool’s radar.
Following a difficult debut season in north London, the 27-year-old appears to have rediscovered his best form under new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who has made him a mainstay of his new-look side. Bissouma is displaying the type of form that made him such a prize asset for Brighton, though that was not always the case.

His first Premier League start for the Seagulls came against Liverpool at Anfield, back in 2018, and it was the Mali international who was culpable for the decisive goal after being caught in possession. In an interview with Tottenham’s YouTube Channel, Bissouma recalled the intimidating feeling of lining up against Jurgen Klopp’s side for the first time.
“During that match, I came out of the locker room and I saw [Virgil] van Dijk, I saw [Sadio] Mane, I saw [Mohamed Salah],” Bissouma said. “These were the guys I saw on TV when I was in France, and now I was in the same tunnel going up against them, it was like a dream, do you know what I mean? Mane and Salah were my idols, and I just thought ‘woah’. My heart was beating fast.”
