‘In Lyon, there are a lot of foreigners’ – Hervé Renard praises Spain as France falter in Nations League final
The French women’s team was beaten 2-0 by Spain yesterday evening in the Nations League final.
The performance of Aitana Bonmatí (26) was once again vital to Spain’s efforts at securing yet another title, as the world champions cruised to victory in an assured performance that never truly allowed Hervé Renard’s side into the game.
France will continue their search for a major title with this being the closest that the nation have come to ending that pursuit, having never progressed past the semi-finals in either the World Cup or the Euros.
Renard was full of praise for his opponents, “ I had the chance to play Spain at the 2018 World Cup with Morocco, with an Iniesta-Isco-Busquets midfielder. And I had the impression of seeing the same thing this evening. ”
However, he believed that Spain had an advantage being able to draw on the success of the Barcelona Femení side that has been in the final of the last three Champions Leagues, while he believes the same could not be said for Olympique Lyonnaise Féminin, “ In Lyon, there are a lot of foreigners. In this FC Barcelona team, there are a lot of Spaniards. ”
Although it should be noted that both sides have a comparable number of domestic players, Lyon have 18 while Barcelona have 15.
Renard continued, “ The Barcelona team is, in a way, incomparable. is an exceptional football school. With a playing philosophy and above all an individual technique for each player which is magnificent. ”
