Jamie Carragher has called on Liverpool to sign a defender this month after Gary Neville raised the suggestion that the Anfield club could be active in the transfer market.
The January transfer window for 2024 is open, and Liverpool are expected to be linked to multiple new players for the upcoming year. However, it is unclear how much an appetite there is within the club to significantly improve Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Speaking last month, Klopp played down suggestions that the Reds would act in the January transfer window in the wake of the serious injury sustained by Joel Matip. The Cameroon international will miss the rest of the season after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament during the 4-3 win over Fulham.
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Monday’s game against Newcastle United, Carragher, responding after Neville floated the idea of the Reds having a dabble in the transfer market, claimed his old club, who currently sit at the top of the table, needed to bring in a defender this month.

Kicking things off, Neville, when asked about Liverpool being title contenders, said: “I didn’t a couple of weeks ago. I thought that they would just fall short, but with what has happened in the last couple of weeks, they will be gaining confidence that they can become the main challenger to Manchester City.
“I am wondering whether Liverpool will have a dabble in the transfer market in January; they won’t announce it because they are clever and never want other clubs to know they are desperate, and they have been very clever in the transfer market over the last few years under Jurgen Klopp.
