Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have both come down hard on Manchester City's Premier League case still being open after Everton were handed a second set of charges relating to breaches of financial rules. It comes as both the Toffees and Nottingham Forest face possible repercussions just months after an unprecedented sanction was placed on Sean Dyche's side.
Everton have already been docked 10 points after an independent commission found their £19million overspend across a rolling three-year period to be worthy of severe punishment in line with new profit and sustainability rules (PSRs). They now face the prospect of being slapped with another monumental blow, this time alongside Forest, after charges relating to the last monetary reports were revealed on Monday.
It comes at a time whereby transfer spending has all but come to a standstill as top-flight clubs attempt to toe the line more strictly in the face of bigger consequences. Manchester City, however, are yet to find an outcome from their own investigation after being charged with a truly remarkable 115 breaches of other rules.
They were shocked by the league over one month before Everton's first case was revealed publicly but are yet to even have a trial date confirmed whereas the Merseyside club could have two asterisks next to their name in the table by the time the season ends. It has caused great controversy between the clubs with Arsenal awaiting the result with interest.
The Gunners, although not in the mix for winning the league over the 10-year period that City have allegedly been cheating for, would have benefited from a possible points deduction on their rivals last season having finished second. The same is true of this term too with a four-way title
